The Cuckoo Maran- Breed Spotlight of the Month (February)

The Cuckoo Maran is a wonderful breed, and they lay super pretty eggs!

About the Breed

The Cuckoo Maran is very beautiful breed that typically will lay medium to dark brown eggs. Our Cuckoo Maran lays more of a pink egg for some reason, so I am not sure why that is, but either way her egg is really pretty. They have a distinct look from their black and white feathers that are super pretty! Cuckoo Marans are known for being sweet and gentle, they also tend to get along with all of the breeds in your flock!

When will they start laying?

Cuckoo Marans start laying when they are around 6-9 months. This is later than most breeds, but lots of people don’t care because of their egg color. They lay an average of 150-200 eggs a year, even though they don’t lay as much as some other breeds their egg color makes up for it. They can also go broody, so if you are wanting to hatch out some of your own chicks, this could be the breed for you!

Are they good for a backyard flock?

Yes, the Cuckoo Maran is great for your backyard flock! They also are great at foraging, so that makes them great free-rangers! Cuckoo Marans are great for just about every situation, so you really can’t go wrong with them!

Let me know in the comments if you have a Cuckoo Maran, and the color that your hen lays! If you haven’t read the last breed spotlight post you can right here.
