Tips for introducing new chickens to your flock!

At some point in your journey of keeping chickens, you will want to add some more so here are a few of my tips on how to make it go as smooth as possible!

Tip 1- if introducing chicks wait until they are the same size as the rest of the flock

It’s extremely important that your new flock of chickens is the same size as the others or else the chickens will pick on those poor babies and most likely kill them.

Tips 2- have a see through barrier between your two flocks

We had a fence between the two flocks that had big enough cracks in it so that the flocks could see each other! Then they will be able to get to know each other but can’t do any of the fighting. Once you think that they are somewhat comfortable with each other it time to remove the barrier. Since our chickens free range, they had plenty of space to get away from each other which definitely helped it go much more smoother than if they didn’t.

Tip 3- a rooster is a big help

Since roosters are known for breaking up chicken fights it is very helpful when one of your flocks has one. Our rooster helped a lot when we had to integrate our flocks together. He would let the hens meet each other and then when they would start to fight he would run over there and break it up! Having him around really took a lot of the stress out of integrating all of the chickens.
