The Cochin- is the breed right for you?

This beautiful breed is a great backyard hen, they have adorable feathered feet and come in many colors. Although this hen isn’t the best layer they make up for it with their looks!

Bella our Cochin is the fluffy white one!

About the breed

Cochin’s lay around 150-180 small, brown eggs a year. They begin laying around 8-9 months which compared to the average is pretty late.

So as you can see if you are looking for a good layer you would be much better off picking a different breed. I would recommend the Prairie Bluebell Egger or the Barred Rock, both of these breeds are some of my best laying hens. The Cochin is used more as a show breed so if you are getting into that, make sure to look into using this breed. Cochin’s have super sweet personalities, they are more laid back then some breeds and because of that they would be great for beginners! They come in a variety of colors from white all the way to golden laced. So you have a bunch of colors to choose from.

This breed is a great breed for a backyard flock or for a beginner just getting started. Let me know in the comments if you have a Cochin or are wanting one!
