Barred Rocks- is this breed right for you?

Barred Rocks are amazing egg layers and they look pretty neat too! Their beautiful black and white stripes make them stand out from the rest of the flock. They are a great beginner breed and are one of the breeds that I started with. If you haven’t read about one of the other breeds I started out with here is that post.

About the breed

Barred Rocks are a very common breed that a lot of chicken owners have. They lay a large brown egg that can have a slight pinkish tint to it.

They lay up to 280 eggs annually, and will start laying at 4-6 months of age. If you are wondering when your hen will start laying then check out this post here! Barred Rocks are a great breed for beginners and are usually friendly. They just have a stronger personality than some of the other breeds, so they will most likely be at the top of the pecking order. My two girls are super friendly and sweet plus don’t have any health problems. Barred Rocks are a very hardy breed so they are great in climates that are hot and cold!

I would recommend the Barred Rock to any chicken owner, whether they are new or experienced! Let me know in the comments your experience with the Barred Rock and if you like them.
