Do you know the difference between cage-free and free-range eggs?

If you don’t have your own backyard chickens then it is important to know the difference between cage-free and free-range eggs. I am going to tell you which one is better to buy and why! The best option to buy eggs would be from a local farm, but if you don’t have access to that then you will most likely have to buy them from a grocery store. If you don’t know the difference then this article is for you!

Cage-free

Cage-free are way different than free-range, in order for it to be considered cage-free they literally just have to have no cages, but they don’t have to even be outside.

These are cage-free chickens

If you still want to buy eggs or meat that are cage-free think again, because cage-free doesn’t require the chickens to have any natural lighting or airflow. They can still be crammed together wing to wing, and they might even have two levels containing thousands of birds. In a way, cage-free is almost just as bad as caged birds.

Free-range

I know that organic free-range eggs are more expensive than the cage-free eggs, but you will be supporting a better farm by buying free-range. If we have to ever buy eggs then we buy the pasture-raised which is even better then free-range. Free-range chickens get to live outside, and have plenty of room to scratch around!

These are the usual eggs that we buy when we have no eggs (which usually doesn’t happen)

Our chickens get to free-range and we never have any problems with them. They don’t really get bored and pick on each other or get sick. Plus they get to eat up all those bugs for us!

Our hens love to free-range!
