The Olive Egger- Breed Spotlight of the Month (August)

The Olive Egger is a wonderful chicken breed! They lay a gorgeous olive colored egg that is a must if you are wanting a rainbow basket of eggs.

About The Breed

Olive Eggers are a cross breed so they come in all sorts of colors! They are usually a cross between a blue egg layer and a brown egg layer, like a Maran (brown egg) and an Ameraucana (blue egg.) They are very hardy and do great in the heat and cold!

When Will They Start Laying

Olive Eggers begin laying when they are 5-6 months old, which is a perfect time if you are wanting a good layer! They will lay a gorgeous olive green egg, and they will produce around 200 eggs a year. If you are wanting to know about some of the earliest producing breeds then read about them here.

Are they good for a backyard flock?

Yes, they do great in a backyard flock! In general Olive Eggers are super friendly which makes them great for beginners!

I would highly recommend this breed to anyone who is beginner or just wants a friendly chicken breed! Let me know if you have this breed and if you love it just as much as I do!
