The Easter Egger- Breed Spotlight of the Month (January)

The Easter Egger is a super cool breed, and for a good reason, they can lay almost every color!

About the Breed

Easter Eggers are technically not a recognized breed, instead, they are pretty much a barnyard mix! They are a cross between an Araucana or an Ameraucana and a brown egg layer. Easter Eggers vary in the color they lay and the color of their feathers! They can lay green, blue, tan, brown, pink or white, just remember that once they start to lay, their color of egg will never change. One of our Easter Eggers lays a very pretty pink color, and the others lay different shades of blues and greens! They also can have muffs and beards which adds to their great personality.

When will they start laying?

Easter Eggers start laying when they are around 5-7 months. They can lay up to 280 eggs a year, so if you are looking for a breed specifically for laying this is a great breed for you! To learn more about the average age that pullets start laying read here.

Are they good for a backyard flock?

Yes, Easter Eggers are great for backyard flocks! They are also great foragers which makes them great for free-ranging, so overall this breed is great for all situations! The only thing to think about if you are going to have them in your backyard flock is that you will likely want to clip their wings. This is because they are super light and tend to be a little more flighty than other breeds. To learn how to easily clip your chicken’s wings check out this article here.

I highly recommend this breed to anyone who is looking for a reliable layer! Let me know in the comments what color of eggs you have gotten from your Easter Eggers!
