If you walk out to the coop one day to find a shell-less egg you may start wondering what happened. So today I am going to go through what may have been some of the causes of getting this weird looking egg.
What is a shell less egg?
A shell-less egg is exactly what it sound like, for whatever reason your hen didn’t have the shell it will just have the membrane keeping the yolk and white in there. Some say that it is fine to eat but I would highly discourage that, because it doesn’t have the shell so it can get bacteria in it which would make you sick!

Reasons it may happen
- Pullets starting to lay- if you have pullets that are beginning to lay there is a chance that you may have gotten this egg from one of them, because young hens often have misshaped or abnormal eggs
- Stress- if your hens are under any kind of stress whether it’s from a predator or then molting you may get a shellless egg.
- Lack of calcium- sometimes your hen may have not gotten enough calcium. Always make sure that they have access to oyster shell so that you don’t have any problems.
- Old age- if one of your hens are getting towards the end of their laying cycle then you may get one of these eggs.
Well, there you go let me know in the comments if one of your hens have ever laid a shell-less egg before!
