If you have hens and they are suddenly not laying it can be very frustrating and confusing. So I am going to talk about a few reasons why they are not laying and how to fix it, so that you can continue getting those delicious farm-fresh eggs.

My first question to you is what time of year is it. Because if it is getting close to winter and the days are getting shorter then that may be why you are not receiving many eggs. If you would like to read about why I don’t make my hens lay through the winter you can read about that here. I also talk about what you could do if you choose to make your hens lay.

If you have free rangers then this may be the problem. Sometimes hens may not lay their eggs in the nesting box, so if you are seeing a sudden decline in your egg production then you may need to go on a hunt around your property to find their hidden nest. This actually just happened to me a few days ago, we only got a few eggs that day so I decided to go on a search for them. And guess what I found… it was a huge hidden nest of eggs!

Those silly birds decided that their nesting boxes weren’t the “ideal” place to lay.

If your hens aren’t laying it may be from some sort of deficiency, like calcium. In order to lay your hens need to be provided some sort of calcium such as oyster shell or eggshells. This also will help so that you get really strong eggshells!

Let me know in the comments if you have ever had any of these problems and what you did to fix them!
