On those cold winter days, you crave a delicious drink to warm you up. You don’t want to make homemade hot cocoa from scratch, because you just don’t want to get out of your cozy, warm blanket. So if you think that you can heat up milk then you will have delicious, instant hot cocoa. You literally just have to heat up milk then drop the hot cocoa bomb in it. Now you can go back to your comfy blanket and drink your tasty hot cocoa that didn’t even take that long to make.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder or drinking chocolate
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Marshmallows (optional)
- Candy canes, crushed (optional)
- White chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions:
Start by melting your chocolate chips over a double boiler.

Then while that’s melting, get your silicone molds ready. Once the chocolate is melted you can spoon some into the molds and spread it around to cover your mold. Let the chocolate sit until hardened and add another layer so that you have a nice thick layer of chocolate. Depending on how thick you do it you may have to repeat this more than once.


When you have a thick enough layer you will be able to pop the chocolate out of the mold without it breaking.

Now that you have the shell ready it’s time for the filling. Start by combining the cocoa powder, sugar, and if using marshmallows I like to add some in.

Now it’s the fun part! Scoop the filling into half of the chocolate shells. In the other half, I like to add more marshmallows and some of the crushed candy canes if using.

Take your leftover melted chocolate and we are going to connect the halves. For me, this was trial and error, I found that if I got my finger slightly warm that I could seal them by running my finger around the edge. After that, I let them cool again, and now comes the messy and fun part. You are going to take the bomb and dunk it in the chocolate so that it forms another coating over the bomb. I don’t have a picture of that whole process because my hands were covered in chocolate 😂. While it’s still slightly wet I like to sprinkle some crushed candy canes on top. You can also melt some white chocolate chips over a double boiler and drizzle that on top.

These hot chocolate bombs were so fun to make and even more fun to watch explode! To use the bombs heat up your milk to boiling and pour it into your cup then watch the fun happen! It’s so awesome to see the marshmallows explode to the top, so I definitely recommend using them.

If they don’t turn out perfectly then don’t worry about it, I had some that didn’t turn out, so we just used them like normal hot chocolate. It may not have exploded like the others, but it still tasted just as good. Have fun making them, after all that’s the most important part!
